Epic Mathiys

The past week of thanksgiving break, was spent chaotically running around Dreadford with mother looking for "things" for my house that apparently everyone should have. In addition, laying around in a semi foodcoma and doing my best to maintain focus on the completion of this beast.

I suppose its partially my fault for putting most of it off, however I am not one to complain about something that turned out well, and I must say after about 40 hours of inking while listening to the Blue Plz podcast and sipping Dew the result has turned out well.

A brief introduction to start you off. This graphic novel is intended to be something of a modern reinterpretation of the classic "Don Quiote". The scene the reader sees swaps between the views of the two protagonists, Dave and Mathiys. All the character in this book, save the "LK" are based off of people I met on WoW. But I ramble so without further interruption...

Ash's kinda Late Gift...not my fault!

I finally gave Ashley her graduation/birthday gift late enough to practically tack a "/christmas" onto it as well. I want to note that this is not my fault, well, at least not entirely. I began this project in July and finished it in September, which I guess even then would technically still make it a late gift...but as late?...I digress!

The gift was the a carved wooden box, not terribly large but not particularly small either, the kind that is perfect to place on ones dresser or perhaps nightstand and keep important little things in. The project began with the acquiring of some hand carving tools my dad had, followed by a bit of practice and the purchase of wood. The idea to make a box like this came from a gift I received on my High School graduation from a gentlemen at my church.

Below is a picture of box lid, still unstained. The wood is a piece of hard cherry which, using a combination of hand tools, dremel and soldering iron I carved/burned to create the result below. I would also like to note that this lid was extremely difficult to get rimmed to the size I needed, I actually had to go to a cabinet shop to get it cut right. Bloody hardwoods...at any rate...
after they asked what I was making I couldn't help but notice them raises an eyebrow as i responded with "The project is ambitious beyond your imaginations wildest comprehensions" :)

Moving on! The picture above ,however, was merely the lid, the remainder of the box was made from glued slabs of light bass wood. The only of place with burning/carving was on the bottom of the inside of the box. The image below shows a stage on minimal carving to this section inwhich I had been experimenting with using burning to create definition.

Finally with the carving done and sanded smooth I added a mahogany stain for the final result. i was particularly pleased with the look of the stain over the burnt shading of the bottom image. All in all a deam this project a sucess.

New stuff comming soon

I apologize for not having any new comics in like...literally months. My bad guys, I just need to get my hand on a new wacom tablet and we will be good to go. However Very soon expect to see some progress posts on my graphic novel for my print class. Don't want to give to much away but I will say that is a modern take of "Don Quixote" simply titled "Mathiys".
So keep your eyes peeled for some new pencil/inks coming soon, and perhaps if I get time I will scan some random sketches I did this summer just for kicks. OH and in the near future (Near meaning anywhere within a week to 4 months) I might be posting some pics of my big summer craftsman project. However for the moment I would like to keep something of a lid on the details relating to that. Alright so good things to come! Nate out!

BALLZ! ZERG RUSH!

This is the result of me attempting to create animated life while I can only think of raising my starcraft 3v3 team (Triple Raynor, Triple Pleasure), up in the league standings.

The following two were less interesting animations I also did of balls....bouncing. Bouncing balls.

Iron Man is Real! He's here in Oregon!

"He's Real I knew it all Along"

The following is an idea that came to me after seing the most recent Iron man movie, which I will say was amazing. If Tony's performance wasn't enough he's got a bro now to fight along side and of course the real reason I wanted to go, the "Iron Maidens" Miss Pepper Pots and Scarlet Johansson as Black Widow. Great movie and it inspired what is hopefully a great comic.

3 new comics!

Here are three new ones I have been working one. I should at least 2 more to add in the next few days. As to two what those may be about I can promise Kyle making another appearance, something paying my respects to a certain super hero and if I have time Hk-Trevor -7 may be making a return as well as the introduction of a new character. But for now lets focus on what we have! :D

1. "Brent's Dream"

This one was inspired by a conversation Brent and I had. I basically regurgitated Brent's brilliant words into his dialog bubbles. I swear the man is a poet at times. The ratio of this one in much more dialog heavy with less in the way of actually vision humor. I should hopefully still be funny.

2. "Can't Out Run Her"

The idea for this comic began with the news that Chelsea did in fact win 2nd place in her event at the state track meet. I decided i wanted to make a comic to comemorate her victory. However some where along the way t morphed into this. it is noted Brent and Chelsea never did go to a dance together, although Scott jokingly suggested the idea once and Trev and I made sure to give Brent crap about it ever since....it is also to be noted i hope Chelsea like this, because if she doesn't, I can't out run her!

3. "My Childhood Dream"

In grade school I wanted to owned fighting roosters. This was a combination of the fact I hated the chicken we had, I loved the song "Gallo de Ceiro" by Ian Tyson, and of course mother's encouragement. She bought me some movie about a slave who won enough money cock fighting to free himself...it was kinda weird, anyway.... Also take not that the drawing in panel 5 is also based of a actual drawing I did in 3rd grade. Yes, I was a strange child, a strange child who grew up to make cartoons.

Some sketches for week

Here are some rough skeletons for what I am going to be working inking and coloring this weekend. I know they are not much to look at right now but they should look pretty good once I do a little editing.

Don't you love it when you can't decide which one is best?

alright folk we got something final finally! Check it scanned, inked, colored and given words! Yeah I am still experimenting with shading but that's not important right now. Beloow are the first 3 completed comics of what i call RTB 4th series.

1. "My Point is Still Valid"

This was actually written by Trevor and facebooked to me strait from the front lines. Now that is what I call dedication! At any rate this was my first attempt at color and with a few grey edges turned out to my liking. You will also notice the use of my new custom font. My only hope is that it is legible.

2."Meth?"

The following is based on a mostly true story of the last time Ashley and I visited Jamba Juice. This was one I tossed to together while bored at the museum one day. My only regret is that I was so idea deprived I actually made a Twilight reference. On the upside you get to see what Ash will look like in fourth series :)

3. "You don't think I'm worth it do you?"

This was very loosely based of off a forgotten comic from the 2nd RTB. The original was a 4 paneler in which had Ashley and Fatima talking about shoes they bought, Brent and Trevor over hear them and get confused so decided to talk about video games. Finally Ashley and Fatima get more confused by the video game talk then the guys had been. The idea was far from original and over boring seeing as i didn't even finish the last panel but instead turned into a drawing of Shane in a dress.
The original idea quite unsalvageable I decided to just take the bones of guys and girls being different. Although after chewing out a guildy for a said ToC10 performance I decided maybe we aren't so different..... at any rate In addition to introducing Chelsea and Michelle back to the series i also used this a chance to play with gradients.

4. "Getin' the girls?....maybe?"

This was a calabrative writen work between Kyle and I. Having payed way to close attention in his ornotholgy class lets just says kyle has had birds on the brain. Me on the other hand..I just want to watch Star Wars again. We trsformed both desires into quick visual jokes and tied them together with a classic Brent moment and an intro with Trevor. Also of note is the cameo of Kyle's friend Amanda in panels 7 and 8. I think in addition to being funny this comic will also help to establish the characters personalities which I am really hoping to make more defined in fourth series.

In the coming week I intend to keep working cranking out more of these. As it is I am working on a comic now about me trying to help Kyle save a damsel. I am slowly remaking old comics from the original Random Thought Books, however remaking stuff tends to be boring and I lose interest fast and will likely focus more on newer work. However if anyone has a particular comic they would like me to remake sooner then later. Just let me know on the facebook

COLOR!

We finally have some color! Bellow are the first two examples of how we are expecting things to start looking in the future. The first still need the background put in and both need the dialog set once I make my font. At any rate more color to follow, I'll keep everybody posted.

Above is a printable foldable and somewhat reasonable facsimile of my cartoon character. At anyrate it is something with color.

Movie Posters

Below are the two hardcore movie poster I did this week. The first is for a film titled "Art Wars" both the idea and the poster are meant to be a spoof of Star Wars and the Star Wars post.

The first poster got me warmed up to begin work on the second more epic poster. This one was more personal as I decided to make it for a movie cocept based off my best friend from high school Brent. Brent is a rocker, a self proclaimed wizard of groove. I decided to title it "Juke Box Hero" after listening to foreigner. I composed the image of several pictures of Brent as well as Aaron Bailey (another good friend) and images of Scarlett Johansson I found online. Why Scarlett? Well....she's hot. I tried to capture the idea of "Drugs, Sex and Rock 'n Roll", which was my original title idea. I also found some stage images and stuffed them in the background. Then I just spent most of the day tweaking the light and colors to get them perfect. I am rather proid of my work.

This summer Brent Long is the Juke Box Hero......he had one guitar....
